How Sprinkler Systems Work
A sprinkler system is typically made up of four key components: a water supply, a control valve, a network of pipes, and the sprinkler heads themselves. The water supply is usually a dedicated tank or connection to the municipal water supply and is designed to provide enough water pressure to activate the system.
The control valve is the heart of the system and is responsible for regulating the flow of water through the pipes. When a fire is detected, the control valve opens, allowing water to flow into the network of pipes. Each sprinkler head is designed to activate when the temperature in its vicinity reaches a certain level, typically between 135 and 165 degrees Fahrenheit. When this happens, the sprinkler head opens, releasing a burst of water that is directed at the fire.
Types of Sprinkler Systems
There are several different types of sprinkler systems, each with their own unique features and benefits. Wet pipe systems are the most common and consist of pipes filled with water that are under pressure at all times. When a fire is detected, the control valve opens and the water is released immediately.
Dry pipe systems, on the other hand, are filled with pressurised air or nitrogen instead of water. When a fire is detected, the control valve opens and the air is released, allowing water to flow into the pipes and activate the sprinkler heads. These systems are typically used in areas where the temperature may fall below freezing, as the water in a wet pipe system could freeze and cause damage to the pipes.
Pre-action systems are another type of sprinkler system and are typically used in areas where water damage could be a concern, such as computer rooms or libraries. These systems are similar to dry pipe systems, but require a secondary activation signal, such as smoke or heat, before the sprinkler heads will open.
