​Fire Marshal - Does My Business Need One?

When it comes to running a successful business there are number of factors that need to be considered and one of them is fire safety training. In particular we are going to explore why a business might need a fire marshal on site at all times. What does this training entail and how often are refreshers of the training required?

What is fire marshal training?

Good question. Here at Parr Fire Protection Services we can shed some light on that.

What exactly is fire marshal ​​​​​​training?

Fire marshal training is the specific teaching of an individual or individuals in what to do in the event of a fire. This can cover a wide range of topics, but some of they key ones are as follows:

  • Evacuation plans and procedures in the event of a fire.
  • How to use different types of fire extinguishers and knowing the difference between them.
  • How to alert others in the building in the event of a fire.
  • Train other members of staff the basic fire safety procedures.
  • Carry out regular risk assessments.

Having individuals on your team knowing what to do in the event of crisis is imperative when it comes to reducing risks in the business.

Is fire marshal training a legal requirement?

Yes, as of the 2005 Fire Safety Order, it is now a legal requirement to have someone in the business who is qualified to carry out fire marshal duties. These individuals will be needed to carry out risk assessments and create the right procedures in the event of a fire.

How often is training required?

Now this one all depends on the kind of business you are running. Different businesses or different sizes have different requirements. 

Although typically they tend to be required every 1-3 years. When a fire risk assessment is carried out this can determine the level of risks there are present in the business. Therefore whether or not the business/building would need to have annual fire marshal training rather than every 2-3 years. 

A place of work where there is a high life risk such as in a hospital or care home, these kinds of places will need more regular fire marshal training.

To give a rough idea of how often a business can expect to carry out refresher fire safety courses and training:

Places where people are required to stay in sleeping accommodation. These would be like hotels, care homes and student accommodation. All of these would require annual training.

Larger buildings, these could be factories, head offices, department stores or even places where large numbers of members of the public are present. These would require annual fire marshal training. 

Places that offer any level of health care or have specific requirements for people with disabilities. These would also require a refresher annually.

Small retail units, cafes and food shops would also fall under the category of low risk. So these too would also only require fire safety refreshers every two to three years depending on size. 

Make Note!

Small business and offices would not usually require annual fire marshal training. These would be required to carry out training every two to three years depending on the size of the business.

Fire deaths are quite uncommon in any workplace, however this doesn’t mean a business should be lax when it comes to providing relevant members of the team with training. Especially when it comes to health and safety.

It is also important to note that if your business has a high turnover rate of staff, or is in fact a business that has employees work shifts rather than a set timetable. Then you might need to consider providing additional fire marshal training. That way you will always have a member of the team available to carry out any duties should the occasion arise.

We believe that every business owner has a duty to carry out regular fire risk assessments. Also to train members of staff in what to do in the event of a fire. Crisis’ like fires can be avoided but there will always be that chance that takes the control out of your hands. The one thing that you can guarantee is that you have a team ready should you need to tackle the risk.

The health and safety of your members of staff and others in the building should me a main priority for any business owner, be it small or large.
